Try Orton-Gillingham for your child’s summer reading tutoring

Heidi Stoffel

Has your child received summer reading tutoring, but it didn’t move the needle? At Aspire Academy, we hear that often, and many times it is because the programs being used are not evidence and researched base for struggling readers.  The American Academy of Pediatrics states that struggling readers and students with the characteristics of dyslexia need structured, intensive, individualized reading instruction from an educational therapist specially trained in explicitly teaching the application of phonics.  Longitudinal data indicated that systematic phonics, delivered at high intensity, individualized to the child results in more favorable outcomes.

Critical elements of that instruction include individual, one-on-one instruction (no tablets and computers), direct feedback and guidance from a trained tutor, and the program must include the five building blocks of reading: decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and spelling.

At Aspire Academy, we use these programs every day to help students achieve grade-level reading.  We have experienced staff trained in the Orton-Gillingham method, and we use the Wilson Reading and Spelling System.  Call for a free tour and consultation.  We will show you are program, and discuss if what we provide will make your child a successful at reading, writing and spelling.
