Cher is a world renowned American singer and actress. You may recognize her from her timeless songs like Believe, or If I Could Turn Back Time. Cher’s life story and accolades could fill pages upon pages. In fact, she is currently working on her memoir at the age of 78!
Cher had difficulty reading in her youth, and claimed that she could not read in school and math was extremely hard for her. This would result in getting lower grades in classes that required reading and mathematics. Later in her adulthood, she would be diagnosed with dyslexia and begin her own journey of understanding how her brain works. One of her coping mechanisms is slowly reading through her lines until she is able to quickly memorize them with ease.
Cher has proudly and openly discussed her dyslexia in interviews and on her social media platforms, answering to how dyslexia impacted her schoolwork and grades. She also claims that two of her grandchildren also have dyslexia, too.
People like Cher who use their platforms for dyslexia representation and awareness help all of us better understand dyslexia and see that no matter how many hurdles are placed in front of someone, success is determined by the person’s perseverance!
When answering questions on social media, a fan of Cher’s asked, “If you could turn back time, and change one thing, would it be to not have dyslexia?” Cher responded, “No! It caused pain, but it’s me!”
