The Honest Truth About Dyslexia

Deni Baird

Dyslexia is a genetic language based disability, or learning difference, that occurs in up to 1 in 5 people. 65% of Aspire Academy parents say that their child cannot pronounce longer words. It is more than elementary school reversals and differences in language processing. Dyslexia can affect overall communication.

In young people, dyslexia can cause a delay in speaking. Meaning, children may begin verbal speech later than their peers. It is not uncommon for children with dyslexia to have trouble rhyming words in nursery rhymes, or using “baby talk.”

In kindergarten and first grade, you may notice replacement words, or synonyms, being used instead of the word on the page. An example that The Yale Center of Dyslexia and Creativity uses is a child saying, “puppy,” instead of the written word, “dog.”

As you or your child grow older, you may notice a pattern in forgetting dates, names, lists, and phone numbers. Confusing words that look similar: annual vs. annul, or bill vs. pill. Even feelings of insecurity around reading out loud, or about oneself can be attributed to dyslexia.

When it comes to dyslexia, we often hear about the bad and negative symptoms and outcomes. Like what is listed above. But, there are plenty of strengths that come with dyslexia, too.

-The ability to see and understand a situation in full, or the “big picture.”

-Taking on an interest, and adopting a higher vocabulary in the specific interest. For example: cars/trucks. Although the word, “tomorrow,” might be a challenge, you or your child can say and spell the words, “alternator,” and “ignition,” due to the heightened interest in the subject of cars.

-Listening comprehension and ability to follow and understand what is being said or told. Audio books and presentations can be a useful aid!
