Quality Tutors / Most Up-to-Date Training
When I choose tutors for Aspire Academy, I choose people who understand kids who learn differently, who are kind, patient, thoughtful, and always want to be the best at whatever they do. People who like to dive deep into whatever they learn and make a difference in the lives of others.
Because I am a certified Wilson tutor, I train and mentor them. But listening to me is not enough. All my tutors receive training directly from Wilson. The focus of the training is to deliver the program with fidelity. Executing each of the 10 steps correctly. By teaching it in the manner they prescribe, the results allow children to maximize their ability to read and write fluently. They study the five building blocks of reading, and how to deliver those through the Wilson program.
The Wilson Reading System is an Orton-Gillingham method that has 10 prescribed steps to achieve fluent reading, writing, spelling and understanding of complex text. These steps are designed to be given in an hour. It is no small task, with lots of small steps that make a big difference in whether a child achieves accurate, fluent reading.
We learn from each other at Aspire. Even though I am certified, my tutors have taught me a few things because they delve so deeply into the Wilson materials. I think of how much I learned through my certification process, but how it is good to never stop growing professionally. Currently we have tutors working on their Level 1 and Level 2 Wilson certification.
When interviewing tutoring centers and schools who provide Orton-Gillingham methods, ask what types of training teachers and tutors have received, and how current the certification and training is of staff. Ask if just one person is certified, or if many are certified.
The results of the Wilson training are so effective, we send all tutors hired at Aspire to in-person, Wilson training for three days, give them access to all the Wilson web sites, and encourage full certification.
